COMPETITION RULES
COMPETITION RULES (Other Than Monthly Competitions)
LINCOLNSHIRE PHOTOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATION (L.P.A.)
Prints need to be titled on the front or back and must bear identification,
particularly the Club/Society name. Mounts to be no larger than 20"x16".
Slides to be labelled and spotted.
The Battles
An inter-club competition in both prints and slides. Each club submits nine
images in each section. There are three preliminary rounds, each judged by
a different judge. Scored on a points system.
Photographer of the Year (POTY)
Monochrome and colour prints and slides - for a panel of three prints or slides,
each individual print or slide in a panel to be of a different category. Maximum
mount size for prints is 20"x16". Entry is open to all members of
clubs affiliated to the LPA and there is no limit to the number of panels.
Categories are the same as for the Annual Competition less Landscape/Seascape
and Any Other Subject but plus Abstract/Derivative which is described as:-
Results of derivation from a negative/slide or without one. "Cokin"
effects are insufficient to turn a "straight" picture into a derivative
The Folio
This is a touring collection of monochrome or colour prints and slides. An
individual competition with no limit to the number of entries but each person
must mark their entries in order of preference.
The Biennial
An exhibition held at a different venue every two years for prints. Mount
size 20"x16". Each club can submit nine prints.
Trade Processed Print Competition
Run by Barton Photographic Club. An individual competition for trade processed
prints, which must be 7"x5" and mounted. Competitors can enter two
prints.
GEORGE SAVILLE TROPHY
George Saville was a Secretary of the Society. After his sudden death, his
widow Doreen donated a rose bowl in his memory. The competition is for prints
one year and slides the next. Members are invited to enter panels of three
prints/slides. There are no specific rules laid down but it is suggested that
there should be a theme (however tenuous!) running through each panel.
Each set of three pictures is shown together on the print stand or on three
screens in the case of slides. This means that the photographer should mark
his/her entries to indicate his/her preference for the order in which they
are to be shown, on the back of each mount or on the front of the slide mount..
Eg Set1 L (left) C(centre) R (right) This is in addition to the normal competition
rules requiring correct size entries to be marked with the title and, in the
case of slides, correctly spotted.
A guest judge is usually invited to come and give his assessment and to award
the trophy to the winner and as many Certificates of Merit as he deems suitable.
TIPS
Remember the judge will be considering the pictures as a panel not as three
single prints. It will make a more pleasing presentation if the two outside
prints lead into the centre one ie people or shapes should face in towards
the centre picture. If the panel is composed of two horizontal and one vertical
(or visa versa) the "different" one should be in the centre. In
colour prints, the colours should harmonise. Similarly print mounts are more
effective if they are all the same colour.
G.P.S. CENTENARY TROPHIES
There are two trophies, one for prints and one for slides and they are awarded to the entry gaining the (total) highest number of points in the Battles.
ANNUAL COMPETITION

listing your entries.

CATEGORIES
Portrait (Human)
To include natural, studio or flash lighting, also candid environmental photographs.
Record
Architectural detail, artefacts, plaques, coins, interiors or exteriors of
buildings, machine details.
Natural History
Wild things in their habitat. (Domestic pets, zoo animals, cultivated plants
etc are not eligible). The scientific or Latin name should be included where
known - some judges are known to mark down where this is omitted.
Pictorial
In this category application should be given to expression. The disposition
of details forming the picture must be a pleasing pattern, assisted by the
way the light is used and applied. Where colour is used, harmonies and patterns
are important aspects. Remember the importance of lighting, atmosphere and
mood.
Landscape/Seascape
The title more or less speaks for its' self- a view over land or sea. You
should try to get something in the foreground to help give depth and scale
to the view. Remember that "chocolate box" pictures might be more
appropriate to Pictorial
Any Other Subject
Anything which really doesn't fit in any of the other categories -or in some
cases could equally fit in two or three without being specific to any one.
Photo-journalism (PRINTS ONLY)
Record of an event or occasion, anything which could be featured in a newspaper
or magazine and which tells a story. Theatre photography and sporting events
fall into this category.
